Quercus cerris - Austrian Oak

General:
The austrian oak is widespread in southern Europe and is an important forest here. It grows as a large tree with a height of up to 30 meters. The leaves are deeply indented, often narrowly elongated, leathery and dark green. The autumn color is yellow and the bark becomes very barked with age.

Care as a bonsai:
The austrian oak is an undemanding bonsai with many design options. It is regularly represented at European bonsai exhibitions and impresses with its natural growth and barky bark. The plant is very easy on pruning and sprouts out of the old wood even after strong pruning. Actually, the oak can be raised through the cut. But it can also be wired or, even better, influenced in its growth with tension wires. A bright location, good irrigation and fertilization are prerequisites for healthy and intensive growth. In winter you shouldn't expose the oak to extreme minus temperatures. In comparison to european oak, austrian oak are also less affected by powdery mildew.
