Quercus robur - European Oak

General:
European oaks are native to Europe and develop into impressive, mighty tree giants that can reach a very old age. The oak was already of great importance in Germanic mythology and is still symbolic for us today for the eternity of life. Oak trees have a strong impact on the landscape and are of ecological importance. They are also among the most valuable tree species in forestry. European oaks can grow up to 40 meters high and usually develop a mighty, broad, picturesque grain. The typical oak leaves are obovate, lobed, leathery and deep green in color. The leaf stalks are short, but the flowers and acorns sit on long stalks (eponymous). European oak oaks develop a very coarse and deeply furrowed bark with age.

Care as a bonsai:
The european oak should not be missing in any bonsai collection. Their cultural importance is high and the character of the tree can be reflected very well in a bonsai. European oak also have very good prerequisites for bonsai design. The plants are robust, very easy on pruning and tolerant of the demands of the location. A bright location, good irrigation and fertilization are nevertheless the conditions for healthy and intensive growth. The risk of powdery mildew is lower in dry and airy locations. In winter, the oak should not be exposed to sub-zero temperatures.
