Ostrya carpinifolia - Hop hornbeam
General information:
The hop hornbeam is widespread in the eastern Mediterranean region. It is mainly found in Italy and the eastern Balkans and is therefore a Mediterranean plant species. Under favourable conditions, it develops into a handsome tree up to 20 metres tall. The leaves are very similar to the hornbeam. Like the hornbeam, the hop hornbeam belongs to the birch family. It got its name from its characteristic fruit clusters, which are reminiscent of hop fruit clusters. The wood of the hop hornbeam is quite resistant to wear and tear and is therefore used for furniture and tools.
Care as a bonsai:
Hop hornbeams have a high sprouting capacity and can therefore be cultivated well as bonsai. Regular pruning leads to dense branching with beautiful leaves. In summer, however, the inside of the crown should be exposed by leaf pruning to promote and maintain fine branching. The plant should be kept as brightly lit as possible and can also be watered with chalky tap water. It should be protected from frost in winter.
