Nothofagus antarctica - Antarctic Beech
General:
As the name suggests, the Antarctic Beech is native to South America. It grows from Tierra del Fuego to Chile as a multi-stemmed large shrub and often has an idiosyncratic habit. When old, the Antarctic Beech can grow up to 15 meters high. The summergreen leaves are small, ovate and wavy at the edges. Fall color is golden yellow and very attractive.
Care as a bonsai:
The Antarctic Beech is very suitable as a bonsai because of its small leaves and fine, dense branching. It also has gorgeous fall color and when leafless, the dark bark with its white dots is very decorative. The Antarctic Beech is quite undemanding. Nevertheless, it prefers a bright location, regular watering and fertilizing and should not be exposed to deep sub-zero temperatures in winter.
