Weigela florida ‘Nana Purpurea‘ - Weigela Florida 'Nana Purpurea'
General:
The wild forms of the weigela are native to China, Japan and Korea. However, they have acquired special significance as an ornamental plant through appropriate breeding in Europe. The exotic looking flowers and the late but long flowering period were ideal conditions for use in ornamental gardens.
Care as a bonsai:
The dwarf weigela florida develops into a great little bonsai. Since it grows like a shrub, however, it requires appropriate care, especially at the beginning. The shoots close to the ground must be removed regularly. Then a trunk with a coarse bark quickly develops. The many fine shoots should not be too close either. Disturbing shoots are removed accordingly. The beautiful bloom in summer develops by itself at the end of the annual shoot. If you cut it back after flowering, a second flower will definitely develop. Weigelia should be as light as possible for intensive flowering and leaf color and should be sufficiently watered and fertilized. A protected location is sufficient in winter.
Special features of the variety:
Red-leaved Dwarf Weigela sprouts intense red foliage in spring, which blends with dark green throughout the summer. In addition, there are still sometimes numerous, trumpet-shaped, purple-pink flowers.
