Malus toringo - Japanese Crabapple

General:
The japanese crabapple or Toringo apple originally comes from Japan and was first described by the German botanist Phillip Franz von Siebold. Accordingly, the species was initially referred to as "Malus Sieboldii". This term is no longer valid today, but is still often used as a synonym. The japanese crabapple grows as a large shrub or small tree with spreading branches and a height of up to 8 meters. The typical apple tree blossom appears in April / May and pea-sized, yellow-orange, long-lasting fruits are formed from it. The leaves are usually 3-lobed, roughly serrated and turn yellow-red in autumn.

Care as a bonsai:
The japanese crabapple can often be found in the bonsai literature under the outdated name "Malus Sieboldii". In Japan, the plant is very popular as a bonsai and is designed in a wide variety of shapes. The crabapple is robust, cut compatible and the branches are easy to wire. The special beauty of the plant then naturally unfolds with the intensive flowering in spring and the fruits as autumn and winter decorations. Crabapples develop best in a sunny spot and if they are adequately watered and fertilized. Protected winter quarters are sufficient.
