General: The evergreen Holm Oak is found naturally in the Mediterranean region. Its firm, dark green foliage resembles that of the Holly (Ilex) with its smooth surface and jagged edges. The shape of the leaves on a plant can also vary. The fruit and blossom have an olive-like appearance. The Holm Oak can cope with different types of soil, but prefers drier conditions.
Care as a bonsai: The crown of the Holm Oak is majestically round. However, the design possibilities extend beyond the broom shape in all directions. The initially soft wood can be moulded very well with wire. The compact growth and small leaves enliven the look even in winter and bring Mediterranean influences with them. It can withstand light frosts, but as a bonsai we recommend frost-free overwintering.
