Tilia cordata – Small-Leaved Linden Tree
General:
Linden trees are native to Europe and were of great mythological and cultural-historical importance, especially in Germany. Linden trees were often in the center of a village and were a place for assembly and justice. The lime tree develops free-standing into a large tree (up to 30m) with a picturesque crown. Due to the bell-shaped crown and the sharp contour, it can be distinguished from other trees from afar, especially in winter. The leaves are the smallest of all types of linden, dark green and heart-shaped. The leaves turn bright yellow in autumn.
Care as a bonsai:
Linden trees are very easy to prune and develop relatively small leaves as bonsai. A beautiful root attachment usually develops by itself. With consistent care a good branching of the crown results, which corresponds to the appearance in nature. With good irrigation, fertilization and a bright location, the linden will sprout several times a year and should be cut back accordingly. The plants can be wired before the leaves shoot. However, due to the smooth and sensitive bark, the wiring must be removed early. In winter, normal protection against dry winds is sufficient.
