Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis‘ - Hinoki Cypress 'Nana Gracilis'

General:
The Hinoki cypress is native to Japan and Taiwan. The evergreen tree grows up to 40 meters high and develops a wide, columnar crown. The bark is red-brown and comes off in thin strips. The leaves are interesting, flaky, thick needles. In Japan the hinoki is also used for forestry, but in Central Europe the plant is only found in the form of the many dwarf varieties, such as the hinoki cypress.

Care as a bonsai:
In Japan, Hinoki bonsai are very often designed in the strictly upright form. This corresponds to the natural habit of the plant. But group plantings or the broom shape are also common designs. Timely thinning of the crown is important so that the green does not become too dense and the finer shoots inside do not die off. Hinokis prefer a moderately moist and nutrient-rich substrate as well as a sunny but also sheltered location. However, they are sensitive to lime and should not be exposed to severe sub-zero temperatures.

Special features of the variety hinoki cypress 'Nana Gracilis':
The ‘Nana Gracilis‘ variety hardly grows taller than 3 meters when growing freely. Their growth is also very slow and dense. The green is finer than that of the species and turned into a shell.
