Amelanchier ovalis - Snowy Mespilus

General:
The snowy mespilus is mainly found in southern and central Europe. But it also occurs naturally in various areas in Germany. Here it grows in light and warm locations, on the edges of forests, slopes or in light groups of trees and hedges. The snowy mespilus is a medium-high shrub with loose branches and a rounded habit. The bark is smooth and dark with age. The leaves are broad-oval, initially tomentose and turn bright red-orange in autumn. The white flowers form in April / May before the leaves shoot and small berries develop later, which are initially reddish and then dark blue to black.

Care as a bonsai:
The snowy mespilus is an interesting plant species for bonsai culture, especially because of its beautiful flowers before the leaf shoots and the attractive fruits. The leaves are also not too big and have a beautiful autumn color. Due to its shrub character, the snowy mespilus must be trained to become a bonsai in good time, as it naturally grows with multiple stems and without a clear main branch. Many forms of design are possible, and there are actually no limits to the imagination.
