Tsuga heterophylla - Western Hemlock
General:
The western hemlock is a typical forest tree in western North America. The tree grows with a trunk that extends all the way to the top and reaches a height of approx. 25 meters. The growth form is thus similar to that of the red spruce. However, the needles do not pierce and are usually loosely distributed and short.
Care as a bonsai:
Very beautiful bonsai can be made from hemlocks. The leaves are small and even thicker branches can be shaped easily with wire. When pruning, there must always be some leaves left on the corresponding shoot. Then new buds and shoots develop. Hemlocks do not tolerate drought and heat. So they are best placed in the shade and a little protected. Waterlogging is to be avoided at all costs. In winter, the plants should be protected.
