Hamamelis virginiana - Virginian Witch Hazel
General information:
The Virginian witch hazel is a separate species in the witch hazel family (Hamemelidaceae). It originates from eastern North America and differs from its fellow species mainly in the time of flowering. The typical yellow, thread-like flowers appear at the time of the splendid yellow autumn colouring and leaf fall, and only really come into their own after the leaves have fallen. It is one of the few plants that spreads last year's seeds during flowering. This even happens audibly accompanied by soft popping noises. The natural growth is funnel-shaped and upright. The typical leaves of this variety are also strongly reminiscent of the hazelnut, although they are not closely related. The rather slow growth, but also the abundance of flowers, can be promoted by a sunny location. The Virginian witch hazel is also hardy.
Care as a bonsai:
As a bonsai, the witch hazel is particularly striking in autumn due to its blossoming and simultaneous autumn colouring. It thrives in a sunny location, but excessive drying out of the root area should be avoided. Frost-free overwintering is not necessary, but it should not be exposed to temperatures too far below freezing.
