Polypodium vulgare - Common Polypody Fern

General:
The common polypody fern is widespread in Europe and grows here preferably in partially shaded, moderately moist and humus-rich locations. Its natural habitat is oak and birch forests, but it can also be found in other shady places and in high humidity as an epiphyte growing on trees. The leaves of the common polypody fern are evergreen and from July to October the characteristic, circular spore clusters (sori) form on the underside of the fronds.

Use:
The common polypody fern can be used and presented very well as Shitakusa or Kusamono. Whether in a bowl, on a stone slab, a piece of bark or wood, it loosens up any bonsai collection and is also appealing on its own. The leaves are robust, evergreen and very decorative due to the typical sori on the underside of the leaves. The common polypody fern should stand in a humus-rich substrate and ideally be poured with rainwater.
