Asplenium scolopendrium - hart's tongue fern

General information:
The hart's tongue fern is native to Germany but is a strictly protected species. The species has been around since time immemorial and is also found in North America and East Asia. It is easy to distinguish from other ferns due to its unfeathery leaf fronds. The leaves are coarse, glossy green and grow to 30-40 cm long in the wild.

Use:
The hart's tongue fern can be used and presented very well as shitakusa or kusamono. Whether in a bowl, on a stone slab, a piece of bark or wood, it brightens up any bonsai collection and is also attractive on its own. The rosette-like growth and narrow leaves create a great silhouette. The hart's tongue fern prefers a semi-shady to shady location and a humus and calcareous substrate.
