The substrate consists mainly of loess and becomes a sticky and easily malleable mass when a little water is added. This makes it excellent for holding the actual bonsai substrate in place when not using a classic bonsai pot. So it is optimal for planting on stone slabs and rocks. It can also be used for shitakusa and moss balls.
