Tsuga canadensis ‘Nana‘ - Eastern Hemlock 'Nana'
General:
The eastern hemlock is widespread in northeastern North America and likes to grow here in cool, damp and shady conditions. It grows up to 20 meters high and the trunk is often continuous, but also multi-stemmed. The evergreen needles are dark green and quite short. This gives the hemlocks a very graceful appearance.
Care as a bonsai:
Very beautiful bonsai can be made from hemlocks. The leaves are small and even thicker branches can be shaped easily with wire. When pruning, there must always be some leaves left on the corresponding shoot. Then new buds and shoots develop. Hemlocks do not tolerate drought and heat. So they are best placed in the shade and a little protected. However, the soil must be well drained and waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. In winter, the plants should be protected.
Special features of the variety:
The 'Nana' hemlock grows weak, prostrate and very compact. This makes it particularly suitable for the design of small bonsai (Shohin).
