Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yokohama‘ - Japanese Cedar 'Yokohama'
General:
The japanese cedar is native to southern China and Japan. In Japan it is a common forest tree. The natural habitus is broadly pyramidal with a height of up to 50 meters in old age. The Japanese cedar prefers a sunny, sheltered, mild and humid location.
Care as a bonsai:
Wonderful bonsai can be made from japanese cedars. The strictly upright shape with a large number of main branches is classic. The branches of the branches are usually designed to rise slightly with very dense and differentiated needle pads. This requires consistent wiring, which is not always easy due to the tightly fitting needles. Regular pruning, pinching and thinning are also important tasks in order to keep the dense needle cushions healthy in the long term. As in nature, the japanese cedar should be in a sunny or partially shaded position as a bonsai. It has to be watered regularly and sprayed in dry heat in order to create a mild microclimate. In winter, the japanese cedar should be frost-free. A typical brownish autumn color develops in autumn.
Special features of the variety japanese cedar 'Yokohama':
The japanese cedar 'Yokohama' grows more slowly and more compactly than the species and is therefore also very suitable for Shohin designs.
