Acer rubrum 'October Glory' - Red Maple 'October Glory’
General:
The red maple has its natural range in eastern North America. It is found here mostly on moist sites, such as swamps or along riverbanks. It develops into a medium-sized tree with a height of up to 20 meters. The crown is usually rounded or conical and the bark is beech-like. The leaves are lobed in typical maple fashion and the fall coloration is intense from yellow to bright red.
Care as a Bonsai:
Because of its unique fall coloration, red maple will be an eye-catcher in any bonsai collection. The species has leaves similar in size to the Norway maple native to our area, but in bonsai cultivation they become much smaller. If the bonsai is then developed in a somewhat larger format, a convincing design is created. The red maple needs a sunny location and should be watered and fertilized regularly. Drought and calcareous water should be avoided. The red maple is frost hardy, but should still be protected from the wind in winter.
Variety specifics of red maple 'October Glory’:
The variety 'October Glory' loses its foliage quite late and the autumn color is very intense and bright.
