Acer saccharum - Sugar Maple

General:
The leaf of the sugar maple adorns the national flag of Canada. This species is also common here and in the northeastern United States. It grows with beech and hemlock as a tree and reaches a height of up to 25 meters. Overall, it is very similar to our Norway maple. The leaves are large, 3 to 5 lobes and the autumn color with the yellow-orange to fiery red-orange color is very decorative. In North America, the sugar maple has its economic importance through the maple syrup made from the sap and the hard timber.

Care as a bonsai:
In order to cultivate the sugar maple as a bonsai, it should be raised to a larger tree, as the relationship between leaf size and tree size is more consistent here. However, through cultivation in the shell and a leaf cut in June, the leaves become significantly smaller. The species grows vigorously and requires consistent pruning. If necessary, the young branches can be well wired. However, you have to make sure that the wire is removed again in good time.
