Castanea sativa - Spanish Chestnut

General:
Spanish chestnuts are native to southern Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. They often grow here in mixed oak forests and reach heights of up to 35 meters. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, roughly serrated and turn yellow in autumn.

Care as a bonsai:
The spanish chestnut has relatively large leaves, but that shouldn't stand in the way of creating a bonsai. A large bonsai is certainly more convincing than a small one. When it comes to care, the spanish chestnut has no special requirements. A sunny location as well as regular irrigation and fertilization are the best conditions for healthy growth. The new shoots are cut back regularly to encourage branching. The branches can easily be wired because they are very flexible. However, the wire should not damage the smooth bark. The spanish chestnut should not be exposed to severe frost and it is also sensitive to late frosts.
