Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star' - Star Magnolia 'Royal Star'

General:
Star magnolia grows naturally in Japan on the island of Honshu in Sphagnum bogs. It is a slow growing shrub and grows to 3 feet tall. The deciduous leaves are elliptical and 6 - 10 cm long with no special fall coloration. The flowers, on the other hand, are an attraction. In March/April, even before the leaves sprout, the star-shaped, white petals unfurl and give off a pleasant fragrance. The star magnolia is free of pests and diseases.

Care as a bonsai:
Magnolias have relatively large leaves, but are also popular as bonsai because of their bloom. Of course, the plants do not grow as dense and finely branched as other species, but you can still grow a nice, tree-like habit. The plants are frost hardy but late frosts are especially damaging to the flowers and fresh roots. Magnolias should not be watered with chalky tap water if possible.

Special features of the variety:
The variety 'Royal Star' is more winter hardy compared to the normal star magnolia. Likewise, it is free from diseases and pests.
