General: The ironwood tree is botanically named after the German naturalist Friedrich Parrot. The large shrub or small tree grows naturally in the Near East, in the Caucasus and in the forests of northern Iran. The plant grows up to 10 meters high and has deciduous, obovate, somewhat leathery leaves. The wood grows very densely and becomes correspondingly hard, which is the reason for the German name. But the special thing about the plant is the unique play of colors of the leaves. In spring, the leaves sprout red-edged, in summer they are dark green, then in autumn they turn long and intense colors. The colors range from yellow to orange-red, purple and scarlet. Often these colors run into each other. With age, a barky bark also forms, which partially flakes off and thus appears multicolored.
Care as a bonsai: Because of its unique leaf coloration and bark structure, the ironwood tree has special potential for bonsai cultivation. The plant is also vigorous, pruning tolerant and undemanding in care. However, a design with wire should begin in time, because the wood later becomes very hard and unyielding. The ironwood tree is heat-loving and a sunny spot is advantageous for intense leaf coloration. The plant should not be exposed to late frosts and even in winter a protected location is optimal.
