Acer pseudoplatanus - Sycamore Maple
General information:
This stately deciduous tree grows upright and can reach a height of up to 30 metres in the wild. The bark is initially smooth, but becomes increasingly fissured with age and changes colour from grey-green to red-brown at the base over time. The 5-lobed leaf is similar to that of the Norway maple, but is rounded at the ends. It has a firm structure, is dark green and grey-green on the underside. The sycamore maple is native to Europe and western Asia. There it can be found at altitudes of up to 2000 metres. In autumn, it dapples the mountain slopes with its sunny yellow leaves.
Care as a bonsai:
Due to its natural, straight growth, the sycamore maple is very suitable as a specimen tree. The trunk quickly increases in diameter and thus emphasises the visual effect in a desirable way. The root base also benefits from this and develops beautifully. Care is undemanding and a sunny location is unproblematic. Watering should be carried out at weather-adapted intervals and then thoroughly. No special protection is required in the winter quarters.
