Metasequoia glyptostroboides - Dawn Redwood

General:
The dawn redwood was known as a fossil species from tertiary deposits even before it was discovered in China in 1941. It is one of the few living plant fossils alongside the ginkgo. The plants still grow into large trees in the humid mountain forests of China. dawn redwood trees reach a height of up to 35 meters and typically have a straight trunk that extends all the way to the top and tapers sharply. The bark is reddish brown and comes off in strips with age. The leaves are needle-shaped, deciduous, light green in color and turn yellow to red-brown in autumn. In contrast to the bald cypress, the leaves are slightly larger and opposite.

Care as a bonsai:
The dawn redwood tree is a venerable tree due to its history and is often cultivated as a bonsai. The design to a strictly upright form or group planting are possible. The plant tolerates a sunny location, but should be protected from hot spells. dawn redwood trees also grow well in shady conditions. Avoid waterlogging in the soil. In winter, the plant should be protected and not exposed to extreme frosts.
