Juniperus sabina - Savin Juniper
General:
The savin juniper is widespread in the mountains of southern Europe, Asia Minor and the Caucasus. It usually grows as a low, broadly spreading shrub with a height of 1.5 meters and a width of up to 6 meters. The needles are compact and usually scale-shaped. The plants are often dioecious. So there are male and female plants. Unfortunately, the savin juniper is an intermediate host of the pear rust. Because of this, it was often removed from gardens.
Care as a bonsai:
Due to its compact foliage, the savin juniper offers the opportunity to create very beautiful bonsai from a native juniper species. These then resemble the Chinese junipers or bonsai models from Japan. With increasing age, predominantly flaky leaves form, from which finely structured leaf cushions can be formed. The savin juniper is also very robust, tolerates pruning and is undemanding to the local conditions.
