Hamamelis x intermedia 'Westerstede' - Hybrid Witch Hazel 'Westerstede
General: Witch hazel hybrids are the result of crosses between the Japanese witch hazel (Hamamelis japonica) and the Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis). In addition to the classic yellow-flowered varieties, there are also selections with red flowers. Like their Asian parents, the grafted hybrids grow as a more or less broad spreading shrub with a height of up to 4 metres. The deciduous leaves are reminiscent of our native hazelnut in shape and colour, although the plants are not closely related. In autumn the leaves turn a bright yellow or yellow-orange. The striking flowers appear in January before the leaves emerge and sometimes adorn the plant until March. The thread-like petals and the loose growth make the plant look very graceful and delicate. In addition, the witch hazel's flowers give off a very pleasant fragrance, making it a popular garden plant in Europe as well.
Care as a bonsai: The witch hazel is also very suitable as a bonsai due to its unique flowering and great autumn colouring. The plant grows somewhat restrained and does not develop any special fine branching. However, due to the loose structure as a bonsai, the slightly fragrant, yellow or red flowers come into their own particularly well in spring. The witch hazel needs a light location and must be watered and fertilised regularly. In winter, the roots should be protected from too much frost.
