Grewia occidentalis - Crossberry

General:
The crossberry is native to South Africa and grows there as a woody shrub or small tree. The narrow oval, dark green leaves are slightly hairy on the top and bottom. In winter between October and January unique, pink-purple, star-shaped flowers with a yellowish center are formed. The fruits then develop from the flowers, which change their color from reddish brown to light purple during the ripening period (January to May). The fruits stay on the bush for a long time.

Care as a bonsai:
The crossberry is a very decorative bonsai due to its special flower. It can stand all year round in the house or outside in summer. It is not frost hardy, but can withstand cold temperatures in winter. A bright location and adequate irrigation and fertilization are important for healthy growth. Long shoots are shortened as soon as they grow out of shape.
