Hamelia patens - Firebush
General:
The firebush is common in tropical and subtropical America. It usually grows like a shrub and rarely as a small tree with a height of up to three meters. The dark green leaves are oblong to oval and have a red petiole and a reddish vein on the underside of the leaf. The firebush is fast-growing and orange-red tubular flowers form on the overhanging shoots, which are often visited by hummingbirds and butterflies.
Care as a bonsai:
The firebush is a very decorative bonsai due to its attractive flowers and the red color of the leaves. The flowers form at the end of the annual shoots, so the shoots should not be cut too early. After pruning, however, the plant can drift through one more time and bloom accordingly. The firebush loves a bright location in summer and can then also be outdoors. The soil should be kept evenly moist, but not too wet. The firebush bonsai should be fertilized regularly for healthy growth. In winter, we recommend a light, but cool location (10-15 ° C) and an adapted or reduced amount of fertilizer and water.
