General: The buddhist pine grows most northerly of all tropical stone-glazed species and is therefore widespread in southern China and southern Japan. It is an evergreen, medium-sized tree up to 20 meters tall. The leaves are needle-like, dark green and light green when they shoot. The yellow-green inflorescences develop into red fruits that are very similar to those of the yew.
Care as a bonsai: The buddhist pine is an interesting conifer and also a popular bonsai. The branches are easy to wire and thus expressive shapes can be created. At the same time, the needle-like foliage gives the plant a special lightness. With a good supply of water and nutrients, the buddhist pine thrives best in a bright place outdoors. However, the plant is not frost hardy and is best overwintered at temperatures between 5 ° C and 10 ° C and in the brightest possible place. Buddhist pines are very sensitive to waterlogging and, especially in winter, it is important to ensure that the soil is not kept too wet. This sensitivity is more likely to affect the mycorrhizal fungi, which live in a symbiosis with the buddhist pine. You can recognize the mushrooms by the small nodules that stick everywhere to the roots. If this fungus dies due to a climate that is too humid and poor in air, the buddhist pine will also suffer.
