Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' - Hybrid Witch Hazel 'Jelena'
General:
Witch hazel hybrids are the result of crosses between Japanese witch hazel (Hamamelis japonica) and Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis). In addition to the classic yellow-flowered varieties, there are also selections here with red flowering. Like their Asian parents, the grafted hybrids grow as a more or less spreading shrub with a height of up to 4 meters. The deciduous leaves are reminiscent of our native hazelnut in shape and color, although the plants are not closely related. In the fall, the leaves turn a bright yellow or yellow-orange. The showy flowers appear in January before the leaves emerge and sometimes adorn the plant until March. The thread-like petals and loose habit give the plant a very graceful and graceful appearance. In addition, the witch hazel's bloom gives off a very pleasant fragrance, making it an overall popular garden plant in Europe as well.
Care as a bonsai:
Witch hazel is also very suitable as a bonsai due to its unique bloom and great fall color. The plant grows somewhat restrained and does not develop any special fine branching. However, due to its loose structure as a bonsai, the lightly fragrant, yellow or red flowers come out especially well in the spring. The witch hazel requires a bright location and must be watered and fertilized regularly. In winter, the roots should be protected from excessive frost.
Features of the variety:
The variety 'Jelena' grows sprawling and has orange yellowish slightly fragrant flowers.
