Picea orientalis - Oriental Spruce

General:
The oriental spruce grows naturally in the Caucasus and northern Asia Minor. The height and habitus are similar to that of the domestic red spruce. However, the needles differ significantly. The oriental spruce has the shortest needles of the genus with a length of 6 to 8 mm. The tips of the leaves are also blunt and do not sting.

Care as a bonsai:
Due to the extremely short needles, their cut tolerance and their health, the oriental spruce is very suitable as a bonsai. The new shoot, however, has to be cut or pinched regularly and the branches need to be shaped by wire. Designing is possible all year round, but should not coincide with repotting. The best time to repot is early September so that the plant can still take root. In summer the plants need a sunny spot, enough water and regular fertilizer. In winter, normal protection is sufficient as long as temperatures do not drop too far.
