Pseudocydonia sinensis - Chinese Quince
General:
The Chinese quince is native to China and Korea. It is closely related to the flowering quince (Chaenomeles) and the real quince (Cydonia oblonga). The Chinese quince grows to a height of 10-18 meters in nature and grows like a tree or shrub. In autumn the leaves change color to different shades of red and yellow and stick to the tree for a very long time in mild temperatures. In spring the quince forms soft pink flowers and the typical yellow quince fruits develop from them. The marbled bark structure is also very decorative on older trees.
Care as a bonsai:
The Chinese quince is a very popular bonsai in Japan. The vigor, the imposing trunk, the delicate flowers, the spectacular fruits and, last but not least, the autumn color are optimal properties for a bonsai. The quince is basically a robust plant, but it should be protected in winter or spring, as the fresh roots are sensitive to frost.
