Punica granatum ‘Nana‘ - Dwarf Pomegranate

General:
The pomegranate is widespread from the Mediterranean region to Central Asia and is now cultivated as a crop in the subtropics around the world. The pomegranate naturally develops into a small tree up to 5 meters high. The light-colored trunk becomes barky with age and has a typical twisted habit. The leaves are narrow, a little reddish at first and then turn yellow in autumn. The plant forms very attractive bell-shaped flowers, from which the edible pomegranates later form.

Care as a bonsai:
The pomegranate is a very popular indoor bonsai due to its fine, light green leaves, light orange flowers and of course the very decorative fruits. The plant is quite undemanding in terms of care. Nevertheless, it should stand as light as possible and be watered and fertilized regularly. In summer, the pomegranate can also stand outdoors. The numerous shoots should be cut back consistently and excess should be removed. The short shoots should be left to stand for blossoming and fruiting. The plants react quite differently in winter. It can turn into a beautiful autumn color and all of the leaves are shed. These plants should be overwintered in a bright but cool place at around 8 ° C. Those plants that keep their foliage and continue to bloom and fruit can also be kept warm at 20 ° C.
