Populus tremula - Aspen

General:
Populus is the ancient Roman plant name for the poplar and the species name tremulus means trembling. In fact, it looks like the leaves tremble when they are moved by the wind, which is what gave it its german name. The aspen is native to Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. Depending on the site conditions, it can be up to 30 meters high, but it can also grow small and shrub-like. Some of the leaves are almost round, slightly indented and serrated. The autumn color is mostly bright yellow, but also red-orange.

Care as a bonsai:
The aspen is very suitable for bonsai cultivation. Thanks to its delicate and smooth bark and the fine leaves, you can create a beautiful bonsai. The trembling of the leaves can also be experienced on a bonsai and the autumn color is very attractive. Due to the vigor, the branches have to be cut in time and possibly wired. The wood is very flexible, but because of the smooth bark, the wire must never grow in. The aspen needs a lot of water in summer, but is otherwise very undemanding and hardy.
