General:
There are around 35 wild species of the apple tree found in Europe, Asia and North America. This has resulted in countless hybrids that can be found in many ornamental gardens due to their abundance of flowers in spring and fruits in autumn.
Care as a bonsai:
Due to the intense flowering in May / June and the small crabapples, these plants are also very popular as bonsai. Crabapples are robust, undemanding and generally easy to care for. By regularly pruning the new shoot, handsome trees develop almost by themselves. In summer, all crabapples love a sunny place outdoors. Protection only makes sense during hot periods. You have to think about adequate irrigation and fertilization during the main growing season. There is nothing special about watering mornings and evenings on hot summer days. The soil should be able to provide as much water during the day as the plant evaporates through its leaves. In winter the water consumption is considerably lower, a sheltered place is then sufficient. Light frost does no harm, on the contrary. The minus temperature promotes good flower and fruit formation for the next year. A good time for repotting, root and topiary pruning is spring, before the crabapple sprouts.
