Fraxinus excelsior - Common Ash

General:
The common ash is one of the largest and most imposing deciduous trees in Europe. It mostly grows here in floodplain and mixed deciduous forests on streams and rivers. The trees grow very quickly in their youth and later reach a height of up to 40 meters. The crown is round to oval with age and a lot of light falls through the broad branches and pinnate leaves.

Care as a bonsai:
Due to its large, pinnate leaves, the ash initially seems unsuitable as a bonsai. But as is so often the case, our personal connection to the plant decides whether it is worth cultivating as a bonsai. Regular pruning, the breaking out of the terminal buds in spring and maintenance in a bowl will result in very handsome trees. The light, smooth bark, the black buds and the transparent leaves quickly reflect the character of the ash in a bonsai. The bright yellow autumn colors are also very beautiful. The ash is quite hardy, but sensitive to late frost. In summer it likes to be warm and tolerates wind, but the soil should be kept moist. Hard tap water can also be used as a lime-loving plant.
