General: The Kobushi magnolia grows naturally in Japan in the plains, but also in the mountains on moist and humus rich soils. It usually develops like a tree with a broad, spreading crown and can reach a height of up to 30 meters. The leaves are deciduous, obovate and 10-18 cm long. The autumn color is yellowish. Before the leaves shoot, the Kobushi magnolia blooms with numerous large, white to slightly purple flowers.
Care as a bonsai: Magnolias have relatively large leaves but are also popular as bonsai due to their bloom. The plants do not grow as densely and finely branched as other species, of course, but you can still develop a beautiful, tree-like habit. The plants are frost hardy, but late frosts damage the flowers and fresh roots in particular. The soil should be kept moist in summer and not dry out. However, waterlogging should be avoided.
