Fagus crenata - Japanese Beech

General:
The japanese beech is native to Japan and forms mixed deciduous forests here, especially in the western mountain regions. The trees reach heights of up to 30 meters and their growth is similar to that of our native European beech. The leaves are egg-shaped and clearly notched. In autumn they turn yellow and often remain red-brown on the tree until spring.

Care as a bonsai:
The japanese beech is often found as a bonsai in Japan. Most of the time, the tree is naturally designed with a strictly upright trunk and broad crown or as a group planting. The new shoot is pinched as early as possible as soon as the leaves are recognizable. If the foliage becomes too dense, the leaf blade can be cut in half to let light back into the interior and to the weaker shoots. This allows notches to develop very beautiful and fine branching. Wiring must be checked regularly because of the sensitive bark. Alternatively, the branches can also be braced. The plant loves a bright place and a substrate that is well supplied with water and nutrients. Rainwater for watering as well as organic fertilization is optimal due to the sensitivity to salt. Japanese beech should not be exposed to severe frosts.
