Bougainvillea glabra - Paperflower

General:
The paperflower is a very popular and well-known ornamental plant. It is native to South America, but also grows in the Mediterranean area as a small tree, hedge or climbing plant. The young shoots are partially thorny and develop numerous flowers in summer. The striking colors of the paperflower are not created by petals, but by colored bracts.

Care as a bonsai:
The paperflower needs a bright, sunny location in summer and should then be watered and fertilized regularly. The plant can also be placed outside in warm temperatures. The plant can be cut back after flowering at the latest. You leave at least two new sheets of paper. In winter the bougainvillea is best kept cool. Below 12 degrees, the plant then hibernates, during which the leaves are partially thrown off completely. Branches can now also be removed or shaped with wire. Wiring should be done in good time, as older shoots can hardly be bent. A bright and warm location in summer as well as good fertilization and winter dormancy have a very positive effect on flowering in summer. Repotting takes place as required, but certainly after three years, when the fine roots increasingly compact the soil and make watering difficult.
