Ficus microcarpa ‘Tiger Bark‘ - Chinese Banyan 'Tiger Bark'
General:
The Chinese Banyan is native to many countries in tropical Asia. It grows there as an evergreen tree with a height of up to 25 meters. The light brown aerial roots that grow down from the broadly spreading crown are typical. The leaves of the Chinese Banyan are very changeable and there are different cultivars.
Care as a bonsai:
In the bonsai trade, the Chinese Banyan can often be found under the outdated name “Ficus retusa”. The plants are very undemanding and easily develop into handsome miniature trees. The ficus can stand in the house all year round, but the place should be as bright as possible. Care is limited to regular pruning and extensive watering and fertilization during the growing season. In winter there is correspondingly less watering and fertilization. Waterlogging should be avoided at all times.
Special features of the variety:
Compared to the species, the 'Tiger Bark' variety has a striking, tiger-like bark pattern. These white cork or lenticels as well as the numerous light brown aerial roots quickly give young plants a natural appearance. In addition, the leaves of this Ficus species are small and the growth is compact. All in all, this plant has very good properties as a bonsai.
