Salix repens var. nitida – Creeping Willow
General:
The Creeping Willow (Salix repens) is found in Europe near the coast, but also in marshy habitats. It is a dwarf shrub and thrives in sandy and slightly acidic soils. The leaves on the profusely branched shoots are a rich green and are slightly hairy on the underside.
Care as a bonsai:
The small leaves, attractive branching and compact growth habit provide excellent conditions for a beautiful bonsai. As it is undemanding and resistant to pests, it is easy to care for. It copes very well with both short periods of wet weather and dry spells.
Features of the variety:
The Creeping Willow usually does not grow taller than 60 cm, but does become quite broad. The leaves have a bluish sheen with white hairs. This downy covering makes the new growth appear white. In spring, the golden-yellow catkins shine brightly even from a distance, attracting bees and other pollinators.
