General:
The water jasmine is also called sacred Buddhist plant or white water plum and grows naturally in Asia. The evergreen plant grows shrub-like and densely branched. The pleasant and intensely fragrant flowers appear several times a year. Therefore, the plant is often found in the tropics as an ornamental plant in pots, in gardens or in temples. For Buddhists all over the world, water jasmine is a sacred plant that is not missing in any temple or in any home garden. Here you can enjoy the intense scent of the flowers and bring them, bound in small bouquets, as offerings to the Buddha statues. The roots, like other parts of plants, are used as medicine (e.g. against skin diseases).
Care as a bonsai:
The water jasmine is also a very popular bonsai because the decorative flowers give off a very pleasant scent. This makes it one of the few houseplants, along with orange jasmine, that can be perceived in the air just by the sweet aroma. In addition, the plant is quite undemanding to care for. It only needs a bright place and sufficient water and fertilizer during the growing season. However, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Depending on the possibility, the water jasmine can also be placed outside in summer. But then it should not be directly in the sun. In winter, however, it must be protected in the house at 20 ° C and as bright as possible. New shoots are cut back after flowering. This leaves part of the shoot with 2 to 3 new leaves.
