Schefflera arboricola - Dwarf Umbrella Tree
General:
The genus Schefflera includes over 500 species and is common in Asia and Australia. The range of shapes within the species is very interesting. Some species grow as a shrub, as a large tree, as a liana or even like orchids epiphytically on other trees. The umbrella tree originally comes from Taiwan and grows as a small shrub or epiphyte with corresponding aerial roots. The evergreen leaves are hand-shaped and have a long stem. Umbrella tree is often found today as an ornamental and houseplant.
Care as a bonsai:
Although the small umbrella tree forms relatively large leaves and does not branch much, it can be used to create very convincing bonsais. Older specimens often have trunks overgrown with aerial roots and appear very primitive. The finger-like, long-stalked leaves give the plant the necessary lightness in the crown area. The umbrella tree also impresses with its modesty compared to its location and its maintenance as a bonsai. The plants tolerate sun and shade, heat and cold, short-term lack or excess of water as well as heavy pruning, in which no leaf remains on the plant. For optimal growth, the umbrella tree nevertheless prefers a bright and warm location as well as an adequate supply of water and nutrients.
