Serissa foetida 'Micro' - Tree of A Thousand Stars
General:
The tree of thousand stars grows naturally in Japan as a small shrub. The evergreen leaves are small and elongated and in summer countless, dainty, white flowers develop. Hence the name June snow or tree of a thousand stars.
Care as a bonsai:
Extraordinary bonsai can be formed from the tree of thousand stars. The leaves are small, delicate and regular pruning results in very fine branching. The evergreen foliage also contrasts nicely with the light, smooth bark. Especially decorative, of course, are the countless white flowers that emerge from the leaf axils, especially in June. In care, the tree of a thousand stars is somewhat more demanding than other species. It needs a bright place and the substrate must be kept only moderately moist. In dry conditions, the plant reacts quickly with leaf drop and waterlogging leads to root rot. The tree of a thousand stars also loves high humidity and therefore should not be placed near radiators. In winter, the plant would benefit from a planting light indoors if temperatures are warm. Otherwise, it can be overwintered in an appropriately cooler location.
Variety specifics:
The cultivar 'Micro' has tiny, dark green and slightly firmer leaves than the species. For this reason, it is particularly popular in Indonesia to create small-sized bonsai (Mame, Shohin).
